The Earl Smith Strand celebrated its first birthday in January of 2010, and is offering a spectacular offering of live theater, concerts, and more in the New Year!
The award-winning Atlanta Lyric Theatre, The Strand’s resident musical theater company, is midway through its 30th season, and will be presenting four musicals in the first half of 2010, including All Night Strut (Feb. 19 – Mar. 7), Little Shop of Horrors (April 16 – May 2), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (June 11-27), and Hairspray! (July 23 – August 8). Tickets range from $32 to $38.
Live theater events at The Strand also include the musical Forever Plaid, produced by PlayRight Productions and the original play Frat Girl by local attorney Jamie Wingler. Forever Plaid is one of the most popular off-Broadway musicals about four young men struggling to make it as a harmony group in the pre-Beatles days of the early 60’s. Their problem? They’re dead! Enjoy an evening chock-full of laughs and beloved music reminiscent of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons for one weekend only, Feb. 4-6 for $25-30.
Twisted Wing Productions presents Frat Girl written and directed by Jamie Wingler (The Affair) and featuring Ted Huckabee (Leatherheads) and Stacey Turner (The Blind Side). In this comedy, a young man receives a rude awakening when he realizes that his friends are intimately acquainted with his bride to be. Frat Girl is suitable for adult audiences. These are just a few of the great live theatre productions to expect at The Strand this year.
The Strand will also be offering film events, including showings of Casablanca and Singin’ in the Rain over Valentine’s Day weekend. Shows that have not gone on sale yet include Jaws in 3D!
A live music event not to be missed is CSO Jazz! An up tempo evening of jazz from contemporary jazz artists on April 2 & 3. CSO Jazz! is becoming a regular feature at The Strand due to popular demand. Tickets for this event are $15-25. It is rumored that several rock bands as well as the popular Still Swinging: Les Still Big Band will be returning to The Strand later this year.
The Strand is operated by the Friends of The Strand, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, who made $5.7 million worth of improvements to the historic theatre in 2008 with a grand opening in January of 2009. The Friends group is raising funds to pay the $2 million loan and welcomes tax deductible contributions of any size, which can be mailed to PO Box 4186, Marietta, GA 30061.
