There is something for everyone happening on the historic Marietta Square this December. It all starts with the arrival of Santa. There are plays galore including the long running Sanders Family Christmas, Cinderella the Musical graces the Strand, there is a Tuna’s Christmas, Candlelight Shopping,  a real Santa’s Workshop and lots of Scary Ghost and Trolley tours. TUESDAY, Now- JAN 3rd “Sanders Family Christmas” Main Stage Theatre in the Square  A lively event that has become a family destination in the holiday season. The beloved Sanders Family (of Smoke On The Mountain and Mount Pleasant Homecoming) are dealing with the beginning of WW II and its effects on the gospel singing clan. NOW –  JANUARY 3, 2010 “A Tuna Christmas” Alley Stage- Theatre in the Square  Christmas is coming to Tuna, the third-smallest town in Texas. You’ll meet more than 20 different colorful characters of all ages and genders getting ready for the holiday activities at a whirlwind Texas pace. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3 rd (5pm-8pm) “Christmas Tree Lighthing” Join Santa and Mrs. Claus for the kick-off to the holiday season Thursday, December 3. Festivities start at 5 p.m. in Glover Park in the Historic Marietta Square. Local school choruses will perform Christmas carols as children visit with Santa in the gazebo until 8 p.m. Santa will light the giant Christmas tree, donated by Big John’s Christmas Trees, at 6 p.m.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4th “Candlelight Shopping on the Square”
Marietta Square shops stay open until 8pm. Every Friday until Christmas.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4th  20th “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” presented by Atlanta Lyric Theatre at the Strand Theate The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4th “Eat, Drink and Be Scary” (8pm) Join Ghosts of Marietta and the Historic Marietta Trolley Company for an evening of stories with the Ghosts of Christmas Past. Enjoy festive refreshments and drinks followed by a 90 minute “spirited” trolley ride. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5th  Marietta Square Farmers Market”( 9 a.m.- 12 noon)  located on the Historic Marietta Square.  The market will take place every Saturday  rain or shine  through December 2009. The market has products that are Georgia grown, made or produced.  That includes fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, plants, flowers, honey, breads, garlic, cheese and other such items.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5th  “Santa’s Workshop on the Square” Children can visit Santa’s Workshop December Dec 5,6,12,13, and December 19 -24th. The workshop will be open Saturdays and weekdays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Sundays from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Closed for lunch from 1:30 p.m.-2:00 p.m.  Santa must leave at the designated hour each day to attend to holiday business, so be aware that if the line is long it may close before the time indicated. Santa’s hours on Christmas Eve are 10:00AM to 2:00PM. He has a busy night planned so he must leave early!

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5th – 6th “Marietta Pilgrimage Christmas Home Tour”
Celebrate the 23rd annual award winning home tour. Glimpse into six private Marietta homes located in the Church/Cherokee Street Historic District lovingly restored and decorated for the season. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5th  (2:00- 4:00pm) Wine Tasting at the Marietta Wine Market. Theme: “Zinfandel Tasting” Open  to the Public)  Cost: Charity Donation: Whether you like your Zinfandels spicy, jammy, or a combination of both, Saturdays tasting is not to be missed!. We will be pouring wines from some of California’s best Zinfandel producers. As a special treat the tasting will include Orin Swifts The Prisoner, one of Wine Spectators top 100 wines of 2009!

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9th   (10:30am) “Mice Tours for Toddlers” at the Marietta Museum of History for toddlers ages 3-5 and their parents the 2nd Wed of each Month . The purpose of the 45-minute tours is to introduce toddlers to history through very basic concepts like shapes, sounds, games, tools and jobs. Museum Mascots Murray and Etta are whimsical cartoon mice that help convey the themes for the tours and provide a little fun. Costumed docents lead the tours that offer a variety of activities including story time and crafts. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11th   “Candlelight Book Signing” (5pm-7pm) at Marietta Museum of History  The Marietta Museum of History will host a book signing for various local authors including Joe Kirby and others. More information will be announced later.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11th  “Scary-etta” (8-9:30pm) – Eat, Drink & Be Scary
Step aboard the trolley for a spirited 90 minute fully-narrated ride through Marietta. Learn the history of Marietta though the eyes of the dearly departed. Hear stories of the ghosts residing in the Kennesaw House and the story of the haunted Mary Meinert statue at the St. James Episcopal Cemetery. Walk briefly around the Marietta City Cemetery and hear the story of Marietta’s most famous ghost the “Lady in Black.” The ride concludes with a haunting at a local pub and former fire house that is full of spirits, both supernatural and intoxicating. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12th “Christmas Wreath Cemetery Walk”  (2pm & 5pm) Join us for one of our special walking tours. On December 12th after the Wreaths across America program’s placement of Christmas wreaths there will be an afternoon walking tour at 2:00 pm. This will be followed at 5:00 pm by an emotional evening candle-lantern walk with readings from original letters sent at Christmastime by the soldiers buried here.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12th  (2:00- 4:00pm) Wine Tasting at the Marietta Wine Market. Theme: “Spectator Top 100 Tasting” Open  to the Public)  Cost: Charity Donation: $10pp Wine Spectator Magazine has just released their choice of the top 100 wines of 2009. We are happy to announce that we currently have 15 of them in stock. These wines were selected from a blind tasting of over 17,000 wines sampled from all over the world. This Saturday we select six to share with our customers. Make plans to attend this special tasting.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16th  (7:00-8;30pm) “Spirits & Spirits Ghost Tours” $15pp  . Spirits and Spirits Tours begins at 7:00 at the Marietta Wine Market following our regular Wed night tasting from 5-7pm. (Cost $15pp.)  Cost includes a glass of wine with your Tour Guide and a one hour walking ghost tour that departs at 7:30pm  Space is limited and fill up quickly in  October. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17-19 “Nativity on the Square” in Glover Park. Citizens for Christian Christmas Celebration sponsors the Nativity each December. Local choirs provide entertainment, singing traditional and contemporary praise music during the display.
