Capers Restaurant = A Successful Transition from Small & Quaint to Wide Open & Sophisticated
By Mike Straus
Several months ago, when I heard that Capers on Main in Kennesaw was going to move from its quaint but crowed location on Main Street in Kennesaw to a strip center on Barrett, I was initially saddened.
Upon my arrival, it looked like just any other restaurant in a shoppong center, but once, I entered into their new location in the Publix Shopping Center on Barrett and Old 41, all my worries were gone. Knowing Stephen and Veronica Dudley, I should never have worried. They have taken a typical shopping center location and turned it into a bright, wide-open, sophisticated and beautiful new restaurant. Yes, the small quaint and eclectic feeling of the old location is gone but in its place is a goregeous new restaurant that has a kitchen 3-4 times larger than the old location, thus allowing Stephen to expand his offerings greatly. This is truly, West Cobb’s most beautiful white table cloth restaurant, but don’t be scared off by the looks for the prices are reasonable and half orders are available on many of the entrees.
I visited for a late lunch last week and was surprised how busy it was at about 2:15pm. The basic lunch menu was the same, but wow I couldn’t believe all the daily specials which were mostly seafood. The day that I visited they had crab cakes, sea bass, swordfish and a salmon special to go along with lighter daily soup, salad and sandwich specials. Devon, my waiter told my that because the former restauranrt in the location was an Italian place that they inherited a brick oven pizza oven and will feature a daily gourmet pizza special. The day that I was there they had a beautiful fresh margarita pizza that looked yummy. The new large open kitchen really allows Stephen and his kitchen staff to really show off their talents.
The menu still features all the delicious items that Stephan has become famous for but as I mentioned is being supplemented with lots of daily specials, which really allow Stephan and his kitchen staff to show off their talents.
I started out with a Ceasar salad, which was a beautiful wedge of Romain with a delicious Ceasar dressing.
I decided to stick with one of my favorite pasta’s, their yummy Crab & Shrimp Pasta. It consists of lots of Crab fingers, shrimp, tomatoes, & asparagus tossed with egg linguini pasta in a spicy Parmesan sauce. As always, it was great.
The menu is American with a little Mediterranean twist. This is one of the few true gourmet restaurants in West Cobb, but you can also get simple dishes like a steak or a burger if that’s what you are in the mood for. Some of my favorite items on the menu include the Grilled Lamb with apricot jelly, the Crispy Brick Duck and the BBQ Salmon. I also can’t wait to come back and try some of their new Seafood specials which sounded so good.
Again, if you’ve been to the former location on Main Street, don’t be put off just because they are located in a shopping center for once you enter you’ll see why we feel that this is soon to become the premier white tablecloth restaurant in West Cobb.,
The new location is in the Publix Shopping Center on Barrett and Old 41 that has a Race Track Gas Station out front. This is the center that also houses the Laredo Mexican Restaurant on one end, Chin Chin and now Capers Restaurant on the opposite end. When you visit, I know you won’t be disappointed and tell them that you read about it in West Cobb Magazine. Mark my words, if you think Chef Stephen Dudley did some great sfuff at the former location, jyst wait and see what he will do in his large new kitchen with plenty of room to spare.
One final note is that they will be opening an outdoor patio once the weather warms up.
